Songs of the Week #22- Editors Pick

“grass hills, sun-filled squinty eyes, general lethargy and ease”

CARRIE:

"Big Wheel" -- Cass McCombs

Cass McCombs newest, Big Wheel and Others came out a few months ago, and the album begins with the voice of a four-year-old describing his own drug use, excerpted from a 1969 documentary of hippie, drugged-out life in Haight-Ashbury (Sean). I mean, yikes. But this song could fit right in to the scenery: grass hills, sun-filled squinty eyes, general lethargy and ease. It's exactly what I want for my Spring mix.

JOHN:

"I'd Rather Be High" -- David Bowie

I recently scored the latest Bowie LP, his first in ten years, and let's face it, perhaps his last, at 60% off in what I think might have been mispriced, but to my advantage. I love the whole record, but I'd Rather Be High is the song which stayed with me first. He has always had a way of current, ahead of his time, but decades on he sounds fresher than the majority of what is being released. I'd rather be high with you anytime, David.

SHENYAH:

"Dreaming" -- Baywaves

I very recently discovered Baywaves on Soundcloud in exploration of some new music. From what little I have discovered, they are in the process of recording a debut EP. I feel like their name pretty much sums up their sound. I mean, I do feel dreamy and serene like I'm soaking up the sunny breeze on a warm day...kicking my feet up, smoking a joint and being content with all things.

STEPHEN:

"A Dancing Shell" -- Wild Nothing

The thing about robots is they are sexy: sleek precision, dissociated voices, red laser beam eyes, they get out on the dance floor and, well, no human can keep up, all those moves executed perfectly every time, their sense of rhythm outstripping us all. But at the exact same time robots are incredibly dangerous because of this crazy sex appeal. It's like you can expend all this emotional energy into this thing that can never actually love you, it can only look good, nay, better, doing everything you do, except feel. It can't feel; and once it leaves you, what do you have left? Just this empty shell and some really great dance moves? Basically the longer you love a robot, the more robot you become - and that is really the biggest danger of all.

REYNA:

“Forever Dolphin Love” -- Connan Mockasin

This is one of the more disturbing music videos that I have seen. It's a damn long song, atmospheric, creepy. It reminds me of something that would have been on The Mighty Boosh. Like a children's program after having been tossed around in the mind of a psychopath. Psychedelic. Awesome. Dolphin Love. Forever.
