Nicolle Elizabeth
In One Note, Gabriel Blackwell asks writers to talk about the book they are currently reading and why. One Note 025: Nicolle Elizabeth, Elissa Schappell, Blueprints for Building Better Girls.
In One Note, I ask writers for just that: one note, a single paragraph, on what they’re reading right now.
Today’s note comes courtesy of Nicolle Elizabeth:
I’m reading Elissa Schappell’s Blueprints For Building Better Girls. It’s a novelish collection of sometimes linked short stories which reminds me of To The Lighthouse in its perspective shifts but also maybe The Madonnas Of Echo Park in it’s humor while dealing with some heavy dark stuff. Though in Madonnas there is more metaphysical and in Blueprints there is more physical but still, either way, this collection is a really interesting and fun read and a nice example of expertly written realism. Which I needed because I’ve been reading Bolano’s Tres and let me tell you, he makes my dreams look like a walk in the park.
nicolle elizabeth is a fiction writer, the poetry editor at word riot and is a contributor at the brooklyn rail, words without borders and many other fine publications. her e-book is forthcoming from dark sky. she is also a bike mechanic.
