Ron,

When you asked me to manage the rental of your home I asked you if you trusted me. You said yes. I told you and Karen I would take care of everything and you did not object. You said you did not have much for funds, so I spend my own money and time cleaning and painting the interior of your home. After I placed the advertisements (which I also paid for) and interviewed the potential renters, I explained that they were extremely discerning people. You must have realized that they would never have rented your place as dirty and ill-kept as you had left it. I took the responsibility on myself to hire Rick as a handyman and he gave me a very good price for replacing all those toilet parts and fixing that piece of cracked glass. Yes I thought it was very important to paint the insides of the closets and the walls and molding in garage; they were smudged and soiled. I also had to clean your dirty carpets.

The Murray’s told me that they wanted the house completely empty and that is why I removed all of your molding scraps and extra building materials from the garage. I was just doing what I signed up for. I told you I could rent your house and I got you a high caliber client with a one year lease. I don’t know why you felt the need to speak to them directly.

I am sorry that you did not appreciate my removal of the brick thing in the back yard. Yes, I heard Karen when she explained that it was a carefully designed labyrinth, and I am sorry that she spent so much time measuring it and burying each of those bricks. The Murray’s would not have appreciated that design in their back yard, even though it was only a one year lease (while they were building their new home) – and I had even paid my husband and son hourly to move all of those bricks and fill in the lawn. I don’t know how you ever expected to rent to normal people with all of that weird stuff in the grass.

I do not understand why you refused pay my friend Rick for all of the work I asked him to do and I do not understand why you wouldn’t speak to me after those nice people signed the lease. You fit the description of greedy rich people who don’t care a hoot for those of us who work so hard to do Christ’s good in the world. But even my patients and charity have been pushed beyond their limit by your quasi-legal maneuvering which has resulted in cheating my family out of the fees you agreed to pay. I am angry that you tricked me into believing that I could trust you in the first place. I thought you were good people. The joke is on me.

And then for you to have illegally demanded those people’s security deposit when the law clearly states that it must be put into an interest bearing account; shame on you for that Ron, and shame on you for reporting me to the real estate commission. I could have lost my job! I always intended to get a property management license – I was just hoping to raise the money for the fees. Now I am out any commission I would have received from managing your property, I am on probation at work, and my word to those people, that I would protect their deposit, has been broken. By you. You are an evil man Ron Heacock.

You know I got a call from your other renter, Bob Chatham. Remember that you had originally asked me to manage your other properties? Well he told me all about how you tried to throw him out of the house on 53rd Avenue. He and his girlfriend signed a lease with you. I know there was some problem with the girl claiming he was abusive, but you don’t know any of that for a fact. It was just her word against his. And for you to have asked him to resign the lease alone or allow you to show that house is wrong. Can’t you see how you hurt people? That girl just moved away and left him with the entire rent to pay. No wonder he got behind on his payments. And that work you wanted him to do, I wouldn’t have done that either, no matter what you thought he agreed to, all bets were off when you tried to change the details after the fact. I am looking for a house for him to buy now.

I will never have any dealings or speak to you ever again. And I know that merciful god will give you everything you deserve because what comes around goes around. Enclosed you will find the three extra sets of keys I made for your house and the 27 compact disks of photographs  that illustrate the condition of the house before the Murray’s moved in. There is also a check in certified funds for the Murray’s deposit. I am washing my hands of this entire business. I hope you realize the kind of financial hardship you have burdened me and my family with. I was forced to pay Rick for his work as well as all the materials. You just can’t cheat and lie to people and string them along and expect forgiveness. Your judgment is coming.

Yours in Christ,
Jennifer Van Stein
