Gregory Sherl

In One Note, Gabriel Blackwell asks writers to talk about the book they are currently reading and why. One Note 018: Gregory Sherl, Ben Mirov, Ghost Machine.

In One Note, I ask writers for just that: one note, a single paragraph, on what they’re reading right now.
Today’s note comes courtesy of Gregory Sherl:

It would be criminal of me to write anything about books without mentioning Bob Hicok’s Words for Empty and Words for Full. I just wanted to mention that that book exists and should be on/in your desk/backpack/pocket. When Gabe asked me to write this One Note, he asked me to write about a book that I’ve used for research. I don’t believe in research because I’m lazy as shit, but a book that has inspired me to write a book (my chapbook I Have Touched You, published by Dark Sky Books) is Ben Mirov’s Ghost Machine. It’s a small piece of art that refuses to fit in its frame. I want this book to be famous. I want Ben Mirov to be famous. This book will refuse to be forgotten. Right now Ghost Machine is an indie darling, selling out small clubs but it should be doing an arena tour. It deserves its own wall at Barnes & Noble, a full-page ad in Esquire. Each printing sells out quickly, so get yours, keep it safe, and whatever you do, don’t let anyone borrow it. You won’t get it back. I am a Ben Mirov fanboy. What are you?

Gregory Sherl is the author of Heavy Petting (YesYes Books, 2011), now available for pre-order.
