Artist Feature: Colin Chillag
"...exposing his palette right there on the canvas."
At some point, the burden of unfinished work weighs on most artists. Sometimes it’s a subconscious self-sabotaging. Other times, our work is left to stagnate because we can’t find the time to bring it to fruition or figure out what’s missing. Either way, it doesn’t feel done. The next time you feel like a piece is incomplete, you might want to reconsider.
The paintings of Colin Chillag seem to go against what is considered finished. That is what makes his pieces so intriguing. He breaks the illusion of photorealism, fusing it with sketches, often exposing his palette right there on his canvas, his process revealed, left as a central component of the final piece. As subjects, he often chooses mundane places and portraiture, focusing intently on certain details and leaving other aspects unpolished and raw.
Colin Chillag’s next solo show will be held at 101/EXHIBIT in Los Angeles from February 28th – April 18th of 2015. To learn more, visit the gallery site, here.
