Smalldoggies Single Poem Feature #2: Chris Davidson, Seal Beach, CA

After the Optometrist’s

Through the car window the boy views
each leaf at the end of its stem a-tremble,
and he’s not sure he’s seen it before—not

remembering knowing that wholes are made
of smaller parts that live, that eyes with still
stronger lenses might see deeper into each

segment, each vein—and now vows to remain
alert to every angle, every line, to light
on droplets of water, their reflections—word

used as well for movement of ground, as when
the Times August of ’69 states that seismic
reflections “indicate the thickness of rocks.”
