Artist Feature: Colin Chillag

At some point, the burden of unfinished work weighs on most artists. Sometimes it’s a subconscious self-sabotaging. Other times, our work is left to stagnate because we can’t find the time to bring it to fruition or figure out what’s missing. Either way, it doesn’t feel done. The next time you feel like a piece is incomplete, you might want to reconsider.
The paintings of Colin Chillag seem to go against what is considered finished. That is what makes his pieces so intriguing. He breaks the illusion of photorealism, fusing it with sketches, often exposing his palette right there on his canvas, his process revealed, left as a central component of the final piece. As subjects, he often chooses mundane places and portraiture, focusing intently on certain details and leaving other aspects unpolished and raw.

Colin Chillag is an Arizona based painter born in 1971 in Syracuse, NY. He attended the San Francisco Art Institute from 1989-1993. He has held several solo and participated in a number of group exhibitions throughout the US. Chillag is represented by 101/EXHIBIT, Los Angeles.
